Leadership Development

Situation

Promoted from a functional role with sales & marketing responsibility in North Asia to CEO of a major Business Unit headquartered in China with global operations, this high-potential leader needed a structured plan to step up to his new role where he had to drive an aggressive change agenda to achieve a significant business turnaround.

Solution

We designed a coaching program along a matrix approach that detailed strengths, development needs, and specific undertakings across four dimensions: strategic plan, personal plan, communication plan, and action plan. These four dimensions were further broken down in three successive phases: getting ready, first 100 days, and monitoring.

Results

Thanks to a thorough preparation during the "getting ready" phase, the executive developed a strong platform that he was ready to communicate and launch day 1 on the job. This platform included clear vision & mission statements and a personal credo and "philosophy to win" in order to get buy-in and create followership.

Armed with a strong sense of purpose based on detailed business and stakeholder analyses that identified longer term objectives, critical issues, and short-term priorities, the new CEO successfully deployed and implemented an aggressive change agenda that involved organization restructuring, relationship development with the local government, key suppliers and distributors, as well as more effective practices in compliance and risk management, key performance indicators, and business results tracking and reporting. The CEO delivered on his mission to radically improve the Business Unit's competitive position over the next three years.
